History
295 West Clayton was originally developed in the mid-1980s by Thomas Tillman Jr. At the time, local publications noted that the building “replaces a carpet store in a converted service station,” marking a significant step in the transformation of the block.
This project was part of a sweeping redevelopment effort that reshaped an entire square block of downtown Athens—bounded by Broad, Pulaski, Clayton, and Hull Streets. As one article put it:
“What do developers Tom Tillman Jr. and John Padgett, stockbroker Al Thornton, anesthesiologist Dr. Robert Pilon, outdoor outfitter Sandy Brown, and Lexington lawyer Johnny Andrews have in common? They are just some of the personalities involved in the total metamorphosis of one square block of Downtown Athens.”
The result was a reimagined urban corner that laid the groundwork for the downtown Athens we know today.
